Laptop computers are less computer for more money and they're all fragile babies. Choose a desktop over a laptop any day. If you must get a laptop, read on. If you want a Tough Book, like police officers or other field techs have in their vehicles, for example, you'll pay at least $4000. Otherwise, get a padded transport case and be super careful about having it bumped around. To extend the battery's life span, remove it if you are not using it regularly. It's called a laptop but, ironically, you should not use it on your lap or any soft, porous surfaces. Hair, skin and other particles will get sucked up into your machine, clog up the heat sink, overheat your machine and cause problems. Keep the vents clean, clean, clean. If you travel and need to use it on your lap, get an EZ Lap, from Cyberguys.com, that's a fibreglass platform that you can lay on your lap before the computer. The EZ Lap can also be used when the laptop remains stationary on a desk and it will actually extend the life of the machine because it allows for increased air flow to your vents. Defrag and scan disk monthly. All laptops are prone to overheating, but we seem to get more problematic Acer laptops than any other brand. Now we can't be absolutely sure if this is because there are just more Acer laptops out there, or if they are of a lower quality. My feeling is they are lower quality. Just going on Acer's website to download drivers is a long and unpleasant experience. If you're not user-friendly, you won't get our business. IBM, HP and Toshiba, on the other hand, seem to bend over backwards to provide useful information on their respective websites and they're responsive when you call. As far as Sony is concerned, sure they make nice things, but they're overpriced and my experience with their phone service is less than positive. And Dell? Well you know that their service is legendary (sarcasm intended here). If you want to invest in a laptop, get a Lenovo (IBM). They may not be as pretty but they are quality built machines. HP and Toshiba also make decent machines. One last thing, get as much RAM as you possibly can afford. The time and frustration saved in the long run will more than pay for itself.
