| Why is my computer so slow? |
Generally it's either a question of a) too many programs running at the same time, b) too many programs loading up at boot or startup, c) spyware and virus infestations or d) your Internet connection speed.
To verify which solutions apply to you: a) shut down some programs. Also, remember that if you have more than one profile running, i.e. your wife or kids each have their own profile logged-on, each of those will also have running programs. Your computer will run more more efficiently if every user logs off after using the computer instead of using the "switch user" function. b) move your mouse cursor over each icon you have in your System Tray at the bottom right. Remove and dis-activate the 'start up at Windows feature' of any unnecessary programs. Examples of necessary programs are antivirus, antispyware and sound control. Any other programs usually fall in the category of unnecessary: chatting, printing, multi-media, cd-dvd burning programs. c) Carry out anti-virus and anti-spyware scans. If you were infected, shut down your System Restore on Windows xp and Windows Millennium only and Re-activate it afterwards to destroy any copies of spyware and viruses that could possibly be hiding in those files. Otherwise you could restore your PC one day with infected files. Windows xp System Restore can be shutdown this way: right-click on My Computer, click on Properties, System Restore, put a checkmark next to Turn off System Restore, click Apply. To re-activate carry out the same steps as before and remove the checkmark. Windows Millennium System Restore is similar. Some viruses and spyware can be harder to remove. If you need help, obtain paid support at 1-866-631-0985 or 506-386-6824. We can usually optimize and speed up your computer within 15 minutes. It may take longer if you have viruses and spyware. d) If your computer is only slow when it is delivering webpages on the Internet, downloading email attachments or other files from the Internet, then you may need a faster Internet connection. Your Internet service provider - ISP - will be more than happy to provide you with this upgrade. If you think your connection is slower than the one you're paying for, obtain free assistance from your ISP. Go back to computer question index.
