Can my neighbours snoop on my computer?

It is possible if you have an unprotected wireless connection and you have file and printer-sharing activated. If you have a malintentioned neighbour in a 100 metre radius with too much time on their hands, or some creep parking in front of your home or office, they could find their way in your computer and view or steal or erase any information they wish. It's too important to protect the wireless Internet signal from your router not to do it. Most routers come with an easy setup wizard that will do this for you when asked. If you do not feel comfortable doing this, we can help you online or onsite. To dis-activate file and printer-sharing, click on Start, Control Panel and Network Connections, Local Area Connection, Properties, and remove the checkmark if applicable next to File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks. I have a wireless Internet connection: does this mean my neighbours can hack into my computer?

If you have an unsecured wireless connection, yes your neighbours may be able to hack into your computer, but they can also commit crimes that you could be blamed for. For the hacking part, read the answer to the question 'Can my neighbours snoop on my computer?' If you have an unsecured connection, anyone within 100 metre radius from your router can steal your Internet connection and commit unmentionable crimes in your name. we say steal because using someone else's Internet connection without their permission is illegal. But what's stealing an Internet signal to a criminal? If the Internet thief commits a crime on your dime, hey that rhymes man, your IP address will appear to authorities searching for the author of said crime and the trail will lead to your home. Don't you know about the Golden 'An' and the tan van? These wise guys thought they had a plan. They got 10 days in the can. Not much of a sentence but remember that was way back in the 70's man. Learn from their mistakes. And never stray from the Law. Watch the video.  Go back to computer question index.
