I have a lot of icons on my Desktop: does this slow down my computer?

If your computer was purchased in 1998 and has not been upgraded since then, the answer would be 'a very negligible amount'. If your PC is newer then the answer is less than 'a very negligible amount'. How's that for a clear answer? :-)  Go back to computer question index.

I have a lot of icons on my System Tray (bottom right of your screen): does this slow down my computer?

The short answer to this question is yes. For more details read the answer to the question Why is my computer so slow?  Go back to computer question index.

Why do programs place an icon on my System Tray, at the bottom-right of my screen?

First off, as a matter of opinion, it is not necessary for any program to place an icon in your System Tray. And secondly, it is not the icon itself that slows down your computer, it is the program that it represents, running needlessly in the background, that is choking your pc's speed. The icon is just a label announcing the presence of the program, much like your program shortcuts on your Desktop. In our opinion, there are only two useful reasons for a program to place an icon in your System Tray: 1- to advise you that an important program is currently running, like your antivirus or other security program; or 2- to act as a shortcut for a useful function such as your speaker or other program that you use on a daily basis. Some companies will claim that running their 'launch program' in the background reduces the start up time of their programs. In our opinion, based on in-house tests, these claims are usually exaggerated and can only be attributed to marketing reasons. They want their logos in your face. These so-called time-savings in program-launch can be measured in a fraction of a second. When you consider the fact that your computer is slowed down the rest of the time by having those programs running in the background, the alleged time-savings are cancelled. Our rule of thumb: if it's not really useful, remove it from the System Tray and reclaim the memory and speed you paid for.  Go back to computer question index.
