On a regular basis, such as every month, click on Start, Run, then type "chkdsk /r" without the quotes and make sure there's a space before the forward slash. Then click Ok. You'll get a message to the fact that your computer cannot scan your disk now, but do you wish for it to be scanned on your next start up. Answer yes and click Ok. Restart your computer. Depending on the size and the health of your disk, this process can take anywhere from 15 minutes to several hours to complete.
